The DOCUTAH International Film Festival has returned to St. George for its 16th year. Filmmakers from across the United States and around the world are gathering in southern Utah for three days of powerful storytelling.

The festival is being held at Megaplex Theatres at Sunset and features 57 new documentary films. In addition, audiences can attend live discussions with the creators behind the films.

Documentary Films That Go Beyond the Surface

This year’s DOCUTAH International Film Festival showcases a wide range of topics. For example, some films explore environmental challenges, while others focus on personal journeys and social issues.

According to program director Tisa Zito, these documentaries dive deeper than typical news stories. Instead of offering quick summaries, the films examine real-life issues in detail. As a result, viewers gain a richer understanding of complex topics.

Many of the films are premiering in southern Utah. Therefore, local audiences are getting an early look at new documentaries from across the globe.

Live Q&A Sessions With Filmmakers

In addition to screenings, the DOCUTAH International Film Festival offers post-film discussions. After select showings, filmmakers stay to answer questions from the audience.

Because of these live Q&A sessions, viewers can learn about the creative process firsthand. They can ask about production challenges, storytelling choices, and behind-the-scenes moments. This interactive format creates a more meaningful experience.

Furthermore, these conversations often spark thoughtful dialogue within the community.

Educational Masterclasses at Utah Tech University

The festival also includes free DOCTalk Masterclasses at Utah Tech University. These sessions are open to students and community members.

Executive director Carmen Wilson explained that the festival provides valuable learning opportunities. For instance, students can connect directly with professional filmmakers. They also gain insight into how a film festival operates behind the scenes.

As a result, DOCUTAH strengthens relationships between filmmakers, students, and the wider community.
