It’s happened to all of us at some point. You’re cruising down Bluff Street when you glance in the rearview mirror and—uh-oh—those flashing red and blue lights are right behind you! They’ve caught you.

What exactly is a Speed Trap?

According to Google, a speed trap is a section of road closely monitored by police or radar devices, often hidden, to catch speeding drivers. In simpler terms, it’s when officers park in sneaky spots, hoping to nab you for going over the speed limit!

Here are some of the MOST COMMON SPEED TRAP LOCATIONS in Southern Utah:

On the Freeway, Entering Utah from Arizona:

This one’s a classic. As soon as you cross into Utah from Arizona, there’s frequently an officer hiding behind the hill, waiting to catch speeders. Be prepared for this one!

Brigham Road near the St. George Reuse Center Compost Site:

If you’re coming from I-15 toward Desert Hills High School, be careful as you crest the hill—you’ll often spot a cop parked near the vintage gas pumps, ready to clock your speed.

Intersection of Red Hills Parkway and Skyline Drive:

There’s usually a motorcycle cop posted up here, waiting to catch drivers speeding down the hill toward Dixie Rock. The motorcycle is small and easy to miss—watch out, there’s sometimes more than one officer!

Westbound on Sunset Boulevard into Santa Clara:

The speed limit drops from 40 mph to 30 mph, and officers love to wait there, ready to ticket anyone who doesn’t slow down in time!
