SOUTHERN UTAH — The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for parts of southern Utah as a new storm system moves into the region, bringing rain to lower elevations and significant snowfall to the mountains.

The advisory was released early Sunday morning for high-elevation areas, including communities near Brian Head, Alton, and surrounding southern mountain ranges. Forecasters expect 6–12 inches of snow above 9,000 feet, with 2–6 inches possible between 7,500 and 9,000 feet as the storm strengthens through the day.

According to meteorologists, winter driving conditions are likely, especially on high mountain routes. Snow levels are expected to begin near 9,500–10,000 feet early Sunday and gradually fall to around 7,500 feet by the afternoon. Heavier bursts of precipitation may push snow levels even lower overnight, potentially reaching 6,500–7,000 feet late Sunday into Monday morning.

The NWS is urging travelers to slow down, allow extra travel time, and be prepared for slick and changing conditions.

Heavy snowfall has already been reported along sections of SR-12 on Boulder Mountain, creating hazardous travel conditions. Drivers are encouraged to use caution or consider alternate routes when possible.

The Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 17.

Travelers can check updated road conditions through the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT), and view updated snowfall graphics through official NWS resources.

Officials say they will continue monitoring the system and will share additional updates as more information becomes available.
