Southern Utah Teacher Arrested Following Online Sting

A 32-year-old middle school instructor from Santa Clara has been taken into custody following an online undercover investigation. Authorities allege the educator targeted individuals he believed were underage girls.

Michael Kleiner, who was employed as an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher at Snow Canyon Middle School, faces multiple felony charges. The counts were filed in 4th District Court following separate operations by law enforcement personnel.

Undercover Interceptions and Online Aliases

According to formal charging documents, the initial investigation commenced on June 24, when Kleiner reportedly initiated digital communication with an undercover police officer. The officer was operating an online profile designed to resemble a 17-year-old girl.

The sequence of the interaction detailed by investigators notes that:

• Platform Shift: After establishing contact, Kleiner allegedly acknowledged the age of the persona and requested to shift the dialogue to a separate messaging application.

• The Alias: On the secondary platform, Telegram, he communicated under the digital username “Spiff Kleinz.”

• Explicit Content: Over several days, the suspect allegedly engaged in graphic messaging, explicitly stated a desire to arrange physical sexual encounters, and transmitted multiple explicit photographs and video recordings to the undercover operator.

• Professional Disclosure: During the digital conversations, Kleiner reportedly volunteered the information that he was actively employed as a school teacher.

Links to Secondary Cases and Admission

As the investigation expanded, detectives discovered that Kleiner was simultaneously the prime suspect in a parallel sting operation conducted by police in West Jordan. In that separate scenario, a different undercover officer had been posing online as a 15-year-old girl. Records show Kleiner allegedly transmitted explicit texts and self-generated explicit photographs to that account as well.

When law enforcement personnel apprehended Kleiner in Southern Utah, he participated in an interview with detectives. According to the police booking affidavit, Kleiner admitted to engaging in sexually explicit text conversations with at least two individuals he believed to be underage minors.

Investigators noted that Kleiner attempted to justify his actions by stating he only participated in the explicit dialogues because he assumed the geographic distance meant there was no real-world possibility of physically meeting the individuals.

School District Response and Formal Charges

Following the arrest, the Washington County School District took immediate administrative action. Officials completely removed Kleiner’s biographical data and directory listings from the Snow Canyon Middle School public website.

Because of the suspect’s proximity to children in his daily profession, law enforcement chose to execute a physical arrest rather than issuing a court summons to mitigate any perceived community risk.

Kleiner stands formally charged with:

• One count of criminal solicitation of a minor (a first-degree felony)

• Ten counts of distributing harmful materials to a minor (third-degree felonies)

• One count of enticement of a minor (a class A misdemeanor)

The investigation remains active as regional police departments evaluate digital forensics to determine if any local students were targeted.
