Inmate Dies Following Hospitalization in Washington County

Washington County inmate dies after being hospitalized

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Utah — A man who was found unconscious at the Purgatory Correctional Facility earlier this month has died, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Jose Delfino Lopez Garcia was found unconscious in his cell on July 2. Corrections staff provided emergency care before he was transported to a hospital for further treatment.

Garcia had been booked into the Washington County jail on June 28 in connection with an alleged domestic-violence incident. Court records show he was subsequently charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault.

Those charges were allegations and had not been adjudicated. Prosecutors dismissed the case following Garcia’s death.

The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation. Authorities have not publicly announced an official cause or manner of death.

Living St. George will update this report if additional information becomes available.
