Each September, Historic Town Square becomes a sea of red, white and blue as Southern Utah gathers to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001 and honor the first responders who answered the call. This year, residents can take part in remembrance events at Town Square and Tech Ridge.
Historic Town Square Memorial and Flag Ceremonies
The lawn at Historic Town Square features row after row of flags for the Field of Heroes display. The display honors first responders and others who lost their lives on September 11.
The patriotic program begins at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, September 11 near the Town Square tower. The tribute includes a formal bell ceremony conducted by the St. George Fire Department, performances by local children’s choirs and remarks from guest speakers. At approximately 6:50 p.m., the Sons of the American Revolution and United We Pledge will conduct a flag retirement ceremony on the Town Square lawn.
Tech Ridge Memorial Stair Climb
Later that evening, from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., the St. George Firefighter’s Association will hold its annual Memorial Stair Climb at the Tech Ridge staircase.
Local firefighters, police officers and residents can complete multiple laps on the ridge. The climb honors the 343 FDNY firefighters who died in the attacks, along with all those lost that day. The evening centers on remembrance, service and community solidarity.
A Community Gathering for Remembrance
The two gatherings offer different ways to take part. Residents can attend the Town Square program and flag retirement ceremony or join local first responders and neighbors at the Tech Ridge climb.
Whether visiting Town Square, climbing the steps at Tech Ridge or taking a moment for quiet reflection, September 11 remains an enduring day of remembrance for the St. George community.
