Melted Massage Monday: Emergency Care in Cedar City Gets a Major Upgrade with New Expansion

A major Cedar City hospital emergency room expansion is now complete, bringing more space and faster care to patients in Southern Utah.
The expansion at Cedar City Hospital officially opened with a ribbon-cutting event. Hospital leaders say the upgrade will help meet the needs of both local residents and the many visitors traveling through the area.
More Space and Specialized Care for Patients
The project added 4,500 square feet to the hospital’s emergency department.
As a result, patients now have access to:
- Nine additional emergency rooms
- Three dedicated behavioral health rooms
- A new molecular imaging services center
Altogether, the hospital now has 22 emergency treatment rooms, allowing staff to care for more patients at once.
Cedar City Hospital Emergency Room Expansion Improves Efficiency
Hospital leaders say the Cedar City hospital emergency room expansion is already making a difference.
Since using the new rooms earlier this year, the emergency department has reduced patient wait times and overall length of stay by more than 16%.
Because of this, patients can move through the system faster. In turn, staff can provide more efficient and timely care.
Supporting a Growing Community and Tourism
The expansion comes at an important time for Cedar City.
The hospital handled over 21,000 emergency visits last year, along with tens of thousands of imaging procedures.
In addition, the region continues to see heavy tourism traffic due to nearby parks and recreation areas.
Because of this growth, the expanded emergency department helps ensure reliable access to care for both locals and visitors.
New Imaging Technology Enhances Patient Experience
The project also introduced advanced imaging technology to the hospital.
New equipment includes:
- PET/CT scanning capabilities
- Nuclear medicine imaging
These tools help improve diagnostic accuracy, especially for patients needing cardiac or cancer-related imaging.
At the same time, the updated systems are designed to provide a more comfortable experience for patients.
Focus on Patient-Centered Care Close to Home
Leaders at Intermountain Health say the expansion supports their goal of delivering high-quality care close to home.
They emphasize that patients often recover better when they can stay near family and familiar surroundings.
Because of that, investments like this help strengthen healthcare access across Southern Utah.
A Step Forward for Healthcare in Southern Utah
The completion of this project marks an important milestone for the community.
With more space, improved technology, and faster service, the hospital is better equipped to handle current demand and future growth.
For residents of Cedar City and surrounding areas, the expansion brings greater confidence in local emergency care.
