St. George Dog Diagnosed With Horner’s Syndrome After Sudden Symptoms

A family in St. George is working to find answers after their dog began showing unexpected and concerning symptoms.
Oakley, an 8-year-old golden retriever, recently developed health issues that led his owners to seek immediate veterinary care.
Sudden Symptoms Prompt Vet Visit
The first signs were subtle.
Oakley’s owners noticed increased drooling, followed by changes in his face. One side appeared to droop, which raised concern.
As they continued monitoring him, they also observed:
- Reduced movement in one eye
- A head tilt
- Changes in behavior
- Noticeable weight loss
Because of these symptoms, they took Oakley to a veterinarian for evaluation.
Initial Diagnosis: Horner’s Syndrome
After the visit, Oakley was diagnosed with Horner’s syndrome.
This condition affects the nerves connected to the eye and face. It can be caused by different underlying issues, including trauma, infection, tumors, or other neurological problems.
Due to the diagnosis, Oakley was referred to a specialist for further evaluation.
Further Testing Reveals More Complexity
To better understand his condition, Oakley underwent a CT scan.
His owners were able to move forward with the scan after receiving financial help from community members.
According to updates shared by his family, the findings suggest that:
- Horner’s syndrome is only part of the issue
- Oakley is experiencing multiple cranial nerve deficits
- There may be spinal involvement
- His condition is considered complex by his care team
Specialists are continuing to evaluate the results.
An Active Life Before the Diagnosis
Before these health concerns, Oakley lived an active lifestyle.
He regularly spent time:
- Paddleboarding at lakes such as Sand Hollow, Gunlock, and Quail Creek
- Visiting ranches and interacting with livestock
- Spending time with chickens and other animals at home
His owners shared that he was known for being friendly and social, often leaving a strong impression on people he met.
A Difficult Time for the Family
Oakley’s condition comes at a significant moment for his owners, who are preparing for their upcoming wedding.
Despite the situation, they remain focused on helping him receive the care he needs.
They also shared that, even with his condition, Oakley continues to:
- Show excitement during daily routines
- Eat regularly
- Respond positively to his family
