Bill to End Twice-Yearly Clock Changes Moves Closer to House Vote
Americans could be one step closer to saying goodbye to changing their clocks every spring and fall.
The Sunshine Protection Act advanced out of the U.S. House Rules Committee this week, clearing the way for a vote before the full House of Representatives. If approved, the bill would allow states to observe Daylight Saving Time year round instead of switching clocks twice each year.
Supporters say keeping Daylight Saving Time year round could mean more daylight in the evening during the winter months, fewer disruptions caused by the clock changes, and potential benefits for tourism, outdoor recreation, and some businesses. The proposal has bipartisan support in Congress and has also been backed by President Donald Trump.
Not everyone agrees, however. Some sleep experts and lawmakers argue that permanent standard time would better align with the body’s natural circadian rhythm. Critics also point to concerns about darker winter mornings, particularly for students heading to school before sunrise.
A similar measure passed the U.S. Senate unanimously in 2022 but never received a vote in the House. If the House approves the current bill, it would still need Senate approval before it could become law.
