Utah has secured the top overall position in the annual U.S. News & World Report Best States study for the fourth consecutive year, establishing the longest continuous reign at the top of the list since the publisher introduced state rankings in 2017.
Economic Growth Drives Utah Best State Ranking
The state’s placement in the Utah best state ranking was buoyed by high performance across multiple core categories, placing among the top 10 states in five of the eight total metrics evaluated.

Category Highlights: The state placed second in Economy, second in Fiscal Stability, and fourth in Infrastructure. Utah has maintained a top-five position in the national economy category every year since the rankings began.

Top Individual Rankings: Utah earned the single top spot nationally for young population growth (specifically among young adults ages 25 to 29), even wealth distribution, and the lowest smoking rate in the country.

Economic Indicators: High gross domestic product (GDP) growth, strong labor force participation, rapid employment expansion, high patent creation, and a fourth-place ranking in business creation drove the state’s economic output.

Leadership Response: Utah Governor Spencer Cox stated that the top ranking reflects the contributions of residents, families, local entrepreneurs, and community service rather than government programs.
Environmental Standing and Category Shifts
While Utah led the nation overall, the report highlighted persistent challenges in environmental metrics and shifting national competition:

Natural Environment: Utah ranked 48th out of 50 states in the natural environment category, which measures air quality, water quality, and industrial pollution. The state has consistently placed in the bottom five in this category since its addition to the study in 2018. Data analysts noted that the Wasatch Front’s topography creates a bowl effect that traps atmospheric pollution and inversions.

Competitive Trends: Economy was the only individual category where Utah improved its rank compared to 2025. Small ranking decreases in education, healthcare, infrastructure, opportunity, and fiscal stability were attributed to faster growth rates in other states rather than an internal decline in Utah’s performance.
