Water Safety Reminder Issued Following Tragic Drowning at Sand Hollow
Another tragedy at Sand Hollow. Please be careful out there.
A 19-year-old man died Thursday after going under the water near the dive park at Sand Hollow State Park and failing to resurface. Bystanders pulled him from the water and attempted to save him, but he died at the scene. (KJZZ)
This comes after several other serious incidents at Sand Hollow this summer, including another swimmer who became exhausted and went under the water in July and a 22-year-old who drowned near the dive site in May. (KUTV)
Please take water safety seriously, even if you are a strong swimmer.
- Wear a life jacket when swimming in deeper or open water
- Never swim alone
- Stay close enough to shore or your boat that you can get out of the water quickly
- Do not underestimate exhaustion or changing water conditions
- Keep a close eye on children and inexperienced swimmers
- Check wind and weather conditions before getting in
- If you start getting tired, get out of the water immediately
- Make sure someone knows where you are and who you are with
Sand Hollow is an incredible place, but open water deserves respect. Utah State Parks specifically recommends recreating with a buddy, wearing life jackets and checking weather and water conditions. (Utah State Parks)
