A local guide to support

Knowing where to turn can matter as much as knowing what to say. Across Washington County, free and confidential support is available for people in emotional distress, their families, students, educators, and anyone worried about someone they care about.

September offers our community a reason to talk more openly about mental health, connection, and the help available close to home. The most useful starting point is simple: support is available now, not only after a crisis becomes an emergency.

Need help now?

Call or Text 988

If someone is in immediate physical danger, has overdosed, or faces an emergency that cannot wait, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Why prevention matters locally

A Clearer Picture, With Careful Context

September is Suicide Prevention Month. Nationally, 49,316 people died by suicide in 2023, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The national rate was 14.1 deaths per 100,000 people.

Closer to home, the 2025 Student Health and Risk Prevention survey found that 12.7 percent of surveyed students in the Southwest District reported seriously considering suicide during the previous year. Another 9.5 percent reported making a suicide plan, while 16.6 percent reported purposeful self harm without suicidal intent.

These figures describe survey responses, not individual students or their futures. Their value is in showing why trusted relationships and clear paths to support matter.

Risk also differs by age and sex. National data show especially high rates among older men, while young people remain an important prevention priority because distress, suicidal thoughts, and attempts can affect students long before a fatal outcome. Effective support begins by listening to the person in front of us rather than assuming one experience represents everyone.

From concern to connection

One Conversation Can Open a Path to Help

You do not need to diagnose someone or find perfect words. A calm, direct conversation can help a person feel less alone and connect with trained support.

1

Notice a change

Pay attention to expressions of hopelessness, withdrawal, severe mood changes, or feeling like a burden.
2

Ask directly

If you are worried, ask whether the person is thinking about suicide and listen without judgment.
3

Stay present

Remain with the person when possible and help create space from immediate danger.
4

Connect to help

Call or text 988 together, or reach a trusted counselor, caregiver, or health professional.
