Finding Refuge: How Youth Futures Supports Southern Utah Youth

Youth Futures Utah provides emergency shelter, meals, case management and family support for young people ages 12 to 18. Its November 7 SleepOut invites Southern Utah to support youth who do not have a safe place to stay.

Southern Utah is known for sunshine, red cliffs and mild winters. That image can make youth homelessness easier to overlook.

Youth Futures Utah says more than 15,000 young people across Utah face housing instability each year. Housing instability is broader than literal homelessness. It can include sleeping outdoors, moving between temporary places or lacking a safe and dependable place to stay.

Warm afternoons do not make sleeping outside safe. Desert temperatures can fall sharply after sunset, and young people without stable housing may face exposure, violence, interrupted schooling and the constant uncertainty of where they will sleep next.

A safe place to pause and plan

Youth Futures operates a shelter in St. George for young people ages 12 to 18. Staff provide a safe place to sleep, meals, basic necessities, case management and support aimed at helping each young person move toward stability.

Young people reach the shelter through many circumstances. Lilliana Rogers reported that family conflict is one common reason. Other young people may be navigating abuse, neglect, housing loss, foster care, juvenile justice involvement or separation from family.

The details differ, but the shelter’s first responsibility remains the same: provide safety without judgment, then help the young person and family determine what comes next.

What Youth Futures provides

Immediate safety

Round the clock shelter, hot meals, hygiene supplies and essential items give young people a safe place to meet urgent needs.

Coordinated support

Case management, therapy, transportation and crisis support help each young person build an individual plan.

A path toward stability

Education, employment support, street outreach and family reunification services help young people prepare for what comes next.

Youth Futures reports that its programs provided 10,924 nights of safe shelter and 17,320 hot meals during 2025. Those figures describe organization results reported by Youth Futures and should not be confused with a count of unique young people.
