St. George Homeless Shelter Expansion Adds Family Units to Support Southern Utah

A major expansion at a St. George homeless shelter is creating new space and new hope for families facing housing instability in southern Utah.

Switchpoint, a community resource center serving vulnerable populations across the region, has opened a newly constructed family unit at its St. George campus. The addition increases the number of dedicated family rooms from five to 16, significantly expanding emergency housing options for parents and children in crisis.

Family Shelter Expansion in St. George Addresses Growing Need

Keeping families together during periods of homelessness can be one of the biggest challenges for emergency shelters. The new family expansion was designed specifically to meet that need.

With support from state funding, private donors, and community partners, Switchpoint completed construction on the 16-room unit earlier this year. The space is dedicated exclusively to families, making it the organization’s first emergency facility in St. George focused entirely on parents and children.

In addition to sleeping quarters, the expansion includes a newly built community kitchen. The previous kitchen area is now being renovated into 16 single-occupancy rooms, increasing overall capacity for individuals experiencing homelessness.

More Than a Shelter: Support Services for Stability

Shelter is only one part of the solution, according to Switchpoint leadership. Residents also receive daily meals and access to on-site case managers who help them create long-term housing plans.

The goal, staff say, is not just temporary relief but a pathway back to stable housing. Case management services help families secure employment, save money, connect with community resources, and ultimately transition into permanent homes.

Emergency housing provides immediate safety, but long-term stability comes from consistent support and planning.

A Fresh Start for Families in Southern Utah

For parents like Valerie Ward, the expansion has provided stability during an unexpected crisis. After relocating to Utah with her four children in search of a safer environment and new opportunities, she struggled to secure affordable housing despite finding employment and enrolling her children in school.

Ward said the shelter has given her family structure, routine, and time to rebuild financially. With her children ranging in age from 6 to 11, she says the stability has made a meaningful difference.

She now hopes to expand her work as a dog groomer and eventually secure permanent housing for her family.

As housing costs continue to challenge families across southern Utah, local organizations are working to increase emergency capacity while focusing on long-term solutions.

The Switchpoint expansion reflects broader community efforts in St. George to address homelessness with coordinated services and family-centered support.
