Washington County Museum Unveils Native American History Exhibit

A new Native American artifact exhibit in Washington County is now open at the Washington City Historical Museum.

This exhibit gives visitors a closer look at the region’s earliest cultures. It also highlights the people who lived in Southern Utah long before modern development.

As a result, locals now have a new way to connect with the area’s history in a meaningful and visual way.

How a Local Collection Became a Public Exhibit

The exhibit began with a personal collection built over many years.

At first, it started as a simple hobby. However, it quickly grew into a large collection of Native American artifacts found across Southern Utah.

Many of the items reflect the history of the Ancestral Puebloans and the Shivwits Band of Paiute Indians.

Over time, the collection became too important to keep private. Because of that, it is now on display so the public can learn from and appreciate each piece.

What You’ll See Inside the Exhibit

Visitors can explore a wide range of artifacts.

For example, the exhibit includes:

  • Arrowheads and stone tools
  • Pottery and handcrafted items
  • Jewelry and cultural pieces
  • Clear descriptions for each display

In addition, some items were contributed through collaboration with members of the local Paiute community.

Because of this, the exhibit offers both historical value and cultural insight.

A Collaborative Effort to Share Local History

Before reopening, the museum temporarily closed for updates.

During that time, organizers worked to improve the space and prepare the new exhibit. At the same time, they collaborated with the Shivwits Band of Paiute Indians to ensure respectful representation.

As a result, the exhibit reflects both history and community input.

Why This Exhibit Matters

This exhibit is more than a collection of artifacts.

Instead, it tells the story of people who lived, adapted, and thrived in Southern Utah. It also helps visitors understand how the region developed over time.

Because of that, it creates a stronger connection between past and present.

A New Reason to Visit the Museum

The Washington City Historical Museum has served the community for over 20 years.

Now, with this new exhibit, there is even more to explore.

Whether you are a local resident or just visiting, this is a chance to step into history and see it up close.
